What they assess

The questions to expect

How do you approach a legal research task — say, finding the current position on a point of law? Which tools do you reach for?

Name real tools — Westlaw, LexisNexis, Practical Law — and your method: start with practice notes, verify against primary sources, note currency dates.

Tell me about catching an error in a document that would have mattered if it had gone out.

A wrong date, name or figure caught late is the perfect story — show the checking habit that caught it, not luck.

Describe managing a large volume of documents — a bundle, disclosure exercise or data room.

Show system: naming conventions, indexes, version control, pagination checked twice. Scale plus zero-defect delivery is what impresses.

Tell me about client or witness contact you've handled — and how you stayed within what a paralegal can properly say.

Warm but boundaried: updates and logistics yes, legal advice no. Showing you know that line is worth more than the anecdote itself.

A fee earner hands you an urgent task while you're mid-way through another urgent task for someone else. What do you do?

Never silently choose: tell both fee earners, get the priority agreed between them, confirm new timings in writing. Communication is the answer.

During a disclosure review you open a document that looks privileged. What do you do?

Stop, flag it to your supervisor immediately, don't disclose or discuss it further. Recognising privilege issues is exactly what firms hope juniors can do.

Which practice areas have you supported, and what did you actually do day to day?

Be specific and honest about your real tasks — drafting instructions, court forms, ID checks, bundling. Inflated claims unravel fast in follow-ups.

Why this paralegal role — and where does the SQE fit in your plans, if at all?

Wanting to qualify is fine — but lead with what you'll contribute to this team now. 'Stepping stone only' answers lose offers.

AI tools now do first-pass document review. What does that mean for paralegals, and how do you stay valuable?2026

Position yourself above the tool: quality-checking its output, handling exceptions, judgement calls and client contact. Adaptability is the sell.

Tell me about handling highly confidential information. What does discretion look like in your daily habits?

Concrete habits win: clear desks, locked screens, careful email addressing, saying nothing at home. One near-miss you prevented makes it real.

How do you keep your work completely accurate when the cost of an error is legal or financial?

Describe your checking system — fresh-eyes review, checklists, reading aloud, second pair of eyes on critical documents. Method beats 'I'm careful'.

Explain a legal or regulatory concept you know well as you would to a client with no legal background.

Do it live, in under a minute, without jargon. Plain-English translation is the most client-visible skill in the whole sector.
