The questions to expect
You're on a respiratory ward with four referrals and time to see two before lunch. How do you prioritise?
Deterioration risk first — respiratory compromise, post-op day one — then function and discharge pressure. Say you'd flag the deferred patients to the team.
Talk us through your assessment of a patient referred with acute low back pain.
Subjective then objective, screen red flags (cauda equina especially), yellow flags, working diagnosis, shared plan. Safety screening said out loud scores.
Tell us about a patient who wasn't engaging with their rehab. What did you do?
Find the real barrier — fear, goals that weren't theirs, life chaos — and rebuild the plan around what matters to them. Adherence is co-designed.
Describe a time your input changed the MDT's plan for a patient — a discharge, a surgery decision, a care package.
Your functional assessment as evidence: what you saw, how you presented it, what changed. Physio's voice in the MDT is the competency.
Give an example of using evidence or outcome measures to guide your treatment.
Name the measure and the guideline, then the honest bit: how the evidence changed what you did with a real patient.
A post-op patient refuses to mobilise because of pain. What do you do?
Analgesia timing, explain deconditioning risk honestly, negotiate a smaller first step, and document. Respect the refusal while shrinking it.
Why physiotherapy — and which rotation are you most looking forward to and why?
A genuine draw to the profession plus curiosity across rotations. Naming a clinical area you want to grow in shows you'll arrive motivated.
Virtual physio, rehab apps and wearables are now part of NHS pathways. Where do they work well, and where do you insist on hands-on?2026
Digital for follow-ups, adherence and access; in-person for assessment, red flags and hands-on treatment. One example of each shows real judgement.
The NHS value 'improving lives' could be physiotherapy's motto. Tell us about a patient whose life you measurably improved.
Function, not flexion: stairs climbed, work returned to, independence kept. End with the outcome measure or the patient's own words.
What are the six NHS values, and which one means the most to you in practice?
Name all six, then go deep on one with a real story. Working together for patients; respect and dignity; commitment to quality of care; compassion; improving lives; everyone counts.
Give an example of when you provided care in line with one of the six NHS values.
Name the value first, then STAR. Small, true moments — a frightened patient you stayed with — score better than grand claims.
A patient's relative is angry about the care their loved one has received. How do you respond?
Listen without defending, acknowledge the feeling, find the fact, escalate or signpost PALS/complaints if needed. Calm and curious beats reassurance.
How to prepare for a physiotherapist interview in the UK
Band 5 rotational interviews mix a clinical scenario (often respiratory prioritisation or MSK assessment) with values and CPD questions — be ready to talk through assessments out loud. Know the CSP code, HCPC standards and one or two NICE guidelines relevant to the rotations offered.
How Healthcare & NHS interviews are run in 2026
- NHS trusts use values-based recruitment: structured panels score every answer against the six NHS Constitution values, alongside clinical scenario and prioritisation questions.
- Band 5 panels (ward manager, practice development nurse, sometimes HR) run 30-45 minutes; many trusts hold recruitment days with numeracy/literacy tests and same-day conditional offers.
- First rounds are increasingly on MS Teams, but clinical roles almost always finish with an in-person panel; expect questions on digital records, e-observations and AI-assisted tools.
