The value is in the action: the question asked, the data wrangled, the recommendation made, and the money or service level it moved. Analysis without a decision is a hobby.
Tell me about a forecast that was badly wrong. What did you learn about the demand signal?
Owning forecast error well is the mark of a real planner: the assumption that broke, the bias you found, and the process change — not the excuse.
Tell me about balancing stockouts against overstock on a real product range. Where did you land?
Show the trade-off made explicit: service level targets, holding cost, obsolescence risk. A number — availability up, stock down — turns theory into a track record.
Tell me about presenting analysis to operations people who trusted their gut over your spreadsheet.
Respect their knowledge, show your working, find the pilot they'd agree to. Winning one sceptic with a small proven result is the strongest version of this story.
How do you set safety stock and reorder points? Walk me through the inputs.
Demand variability, lead time and its variability, service level target — plus judgement on top: supplier reliability, seasonality, shelf life. Formula plus judgement wins.
What's your toolkit — Excel depth, SQL, Power BI or Tableau, any ERP — and which have you used in anger?
Be precise about depth: pivot tables and lookups versus modelling; queries you wrote versus dashboards you viewed. Expect a practical test — overclaiming backfires.
Case: your key supplier's lead time doubles overnight. Walk me through your analysis for the next 48 hours.
Structure out loud: exposure first (which SKUs, how much cover), then options — expedite, second-source, ration — with costs, and end on a recommendation.
