What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about a set of accounts or management accounts you prepared end to end. What was your process?

Walk the cycle: journals, reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, review, commentary. Name the deadlines you hit and anything you improved in the process.

Describe a time you caught a material error before the accounts were finalised.

Say what made you look twice — a variance, a balance that felt wrong. Instinct backed by reconciliation is exactly what they're hiring.

Tell me about a time a budget holder challenged your numbers. How did you handle it?

Stay open — check their claim seriously before defending. The result is a budget holder who trusts your numbers more afterwards, whoever was right.

A director pressures you to recognise revenue early to hit a target. What do you do?

Anchor to the standard: recognition follows performance obligations, not wishes. Explain, offer legitimate alternatives, and escalate if pressed. Never just comply.

Explain the difference between accruals and prepayments, and how you account for each.

Accrual: expense incurred, not yet invoiced — Dr expense, Cr accruals. Prepayment: paid ahead — Dr prepayments, Cr expense. A worked example seals it.

When does a UK company report under FRS 102 rather than IFRS, and what differences have you actually dealt with?

Listed groups use IFRS; most private UK companies use FRS 102. Naming one practical difference you've handled (e.g. lease treatment) beats reciting theory.

How would you approach a bank reconciliation that won't balance?

Show a method: check the difference for clues (divisible by 9 = transposition), timing items, unpresented cheques, then line-by-line. Systematic beats lucky.

Why accountancy — and where are you with ACA, ACCA or CIMA?

Be specific about what you enjoy (making numbers tell the truth of a business) and honest about exam progress and your study plan. Employers fund what looks committed.

Cloud accounting and AI now automate much of the transactional layer. What does that change about the accountant's job?2026

The value moves up: judgement, controls, interpretation, advice. Name a tool you've used and where you still checked its output — fluency plus scepticism wins.

Walk me through the three financial statements and how they link together.

Net income tops the cash flow statement; ending cash lands on the balance sheet; net income also flows to retained earnings. Practise it aloud in under 90 seconds.

What's the difference between profit and cash flow, and why does it matter?

Accruals versus cash timing. Give one concrete example — a profitable firm failing on cash because debtors pay late — and you've shown real understanding.

Tell me about a time you found an error or discrepancy in financial data. What did you do?

Show your method: how you spotted it, traced the cause, corrected it, and what control you added so it can't recur. The control is the impressive part.
