What they assess

The questions to expect

What does Consumer Duty require of an adviser, and how would it show up in your client files?

Good outcomes, fair value, understanding, support — then make it concrete: documented objectives, why this product, evidence the client understood. Files are the proof.

Walk me through your advice process from first fact-find to suitability report.

Fact-find, objectives, risk profiling, research, recommendation, suitability letter, review cycle. Saying where clients usually get lost — and how you help — adds depth.

A client wants to transfer out of a defined benefit pension. How do you approach that conversation?

Start from the FCA's stance: transfers are usually unsuitable. Show you'd explore what's driving the wish and the safeguarded benefits at stake before any recommendation.

Tell me about a client relationship you built from scratch and kept through a market downturn.

Downturns are when advisers earn their fee. Show proactive contact, honest framing of losses, and the client still with you after. Trust kept is the result.

How have you grown a client bank? Tell me about a referral or lead you converted.

Name your channels — professional introducers, existing-client referrals, seminars — with one conversion story and numbers. Advisers are hired partly for their pipeline habits.

Describe a time you told a client that what they wanted to do wasn't in their best interest.

This is the integrity question in disguise. Show empathy, clear reasoning, an alternative offered — and that you'd document the advice even if they insisted.

Markets fall 20% in a fortnight and your clients are phoning in a panic. What does your first week look like?

Triage the anxious, communicate to everyone before they call, anchor to plans made in calm weather. Behavioural coaching is the modern adviser's core skill — say so.

Why financial advice as a career — and why independent advice specifically?

Connect a real story about money changing someone's life to the whole-of-market freedom of independence. Mention your Level 4 diploma status and CPD honestly.

Robo-advice and AI planning tools keep improving. What does a human adviser add in 2026?2026

Behavioural coaching, complexity, accountability — algorithms don't hold hands in a crash. Show you use the tools for efficiency while owning the relationship.

Walk me through the three financial statements and how they link together.

Net income tops the cash flow statement; ending cash lands on the balance sheet; net income also flows to retained earnings. Practise it aloud in under 90 seconds.

What's the difference between profit and cash flow, and why does it matter?

Accruals versus cash timing. Give one concrete example — a profitable firm failing on cash because debtors pay late — and you've shown real understanding.

Tell me about a time you found an error or discrepancy in financial data. What did you do?

Show your method: how you spotted it, traced the cause, corrected it, and what control you added so it can't recur. The control is the impressive part.
