What they assess

The questions to expect

How do the three financial statements link — and if depreciation increases by £10, what happens to each?

The classic variant: P&L profit falls £10 pre-tax; cash flow adds it back (non-cash), so cash falls only by the tax effect; balance sheet PP&E and equity drop. Rehearse aloud.

What's the difference between a budget and a forecast, and how often should a forecast be refreshed?

Budget = the annual commitment; forecast = the living best estimate. Mention rolling forecasts and what triggers a re-forecast. Show you've done, not just defined.

Walk me through how you'd approach variance analysis at month-end. What do you look at first?

Materiality first, then price/volume/mix splits, then the story behind each driver. Finish with 'and here's what I'd tell the budget holder' — analysis needs an audience.

Tell me about a time your analysis changed a business decision.

The arc is analysis → insight → decision → measurable result. If your work only informed rather than changed a call, say what it protected the business from.

Describe the most complex dataset you've worked with. How did you make sure your conclusions were sound?

Name the tools (Excel, SQL, Power BI) and the checks — reconciling to source, sense-checking magnitudes, a second pair of eyes. Rigour is the competency here.

Tell me about a time you spotted a commercial risk or opportunity in the numbers before anyone else.

A small, true example works: a margin trend, a customer concentration, a cost creeping. What matters is that you looked beyond the reconciliation to the business.

Tell me about presenting numbers to senior stakeholders. How did you decide what to leave out?

Lead with the 'so what', keep three numbers, park the workings in an appendix. Describing what you cut shows more judgement than describing what you built.

Why FP&A rather than financial accounting or audit?

Forward-looking versus backward-looking is the honest heart of it: you'd rather influence next quarter than report last one. Tie it to evidence from your path.

How are you using AI or automation in Excel and your planning tools — and where do you double-check it?2026

Name real use: formula drafting, Power Query, commentary first drafts. Then your control: never publish an AI number you haven't tied to source. Judgement is the differentiator.

Walk me through the three financial statements and how they link together.

Net income tops the cash flow statement; ending cash lands on the balance sheet; net income also flows to retained earnings. Practise it aloud in under 90 seconds.

What's the difference between profit and cash flow, and why does it matter?

Accruals versus cash timing. Give one concrete example — a profitable firm failing on cash because debtors pay late — and you've shown real understanding.

Tell me about a time you found an error or discrepancy in financial data. What did you do?

Show your method: how you spotted it, traced the cause, corrected it, and what control you added so it can't recur. The control is the impressive part.
