What's the best face work you've done? Tell me about the job and the standard it was checked to.
Face work is your shop window — describe the bond, the pointing finish, and who inspected it. Photos on your phone do the talking.
Tell me about setting out a tricky bit of brickwork — an opening, a corner, working to datum.
Show the checks: gauge rods, dry bonding to avoid cuts at openings, keeping to datum. Getting it right before the mortar's on is the skill.
What's a fair day's laying for you on a straight run — and how do you keep the quality up at that speed?
Give an honest number for good conditions and say what slows it (weather, detail work, hoisting). Inflated brick counts get found out on day one.
Tell me about the best gang you've worked in. What made it work — and what was your role in that?
Brickwork is gang work: talk about rhythm with your labourer, splitting runs fairly, covering for each other. Reliability keeps you in a good gang.
Talk me through building a cavity wall properly — ties, insulation, DPC, weep holes.
This is the standard competence check: tie spacing, keeping the cavity clean, lapping DPC, weep hole positions. NHBC inspections fail walls on exactly these.
How does weather affect your work — and when do you stop laying?
Know the limits: no laying in frost or below around 3°C and falling, protecting fresh work from rain and frost, mortar workability in heat. It's a quality answer, not a weakness.
What bonds and finishes have you worked in — and which pointing profiles can you do well?
Stretcher is assumed; Flemish, English and decorative work set you apart. Name the pointing styles — weather struck, bucket handle, recessed — you're genuinely quick at.
Why bricklaying — and what keeps you at it?
Honest answers win: seeing a wall stand at the end of the day, the money when the price work is good, the trade in your hands. Keep it real.

Any exposure counts, and willingness matters more: these systems need brickies who'll learn the manufacturer's method rather than fight it.
Which cards and tickets do you hold — CSCS and any trade-specific ones — and are they all in date?
Bring the actual cards. Know every expiry date, and if something's lapsed, say what's booked to renew it — an expired ticket can't start on site.
Tell me about a time you spotted a hazard on site before it hurt someone. What did you do?
A real, small example is perfect: what you saw, making it safe or fencing it off, and telling the supervisor. Reporting is the part they're listening for.
You're told to crack on with a task you believe is unsafe. Talk me through exactly what you do.
Stop, say why calmly, suggest the safe alternative, and escalate if pushed. Employers are testing whether you'll actually refuse — say plainly that you would.
How to prepare for a bricklayer interview in the UK
Bring your CSCS card and expect a practical assessment — many UK bricklaying jobs are effectively decided by a trial day or test panel. Know cavity wall detail cold; it's the question that separates time-served brickies from chancers.
How Construction & Trades interviews are run in 2026
- Interviews are short and practical: cards and tickets are checked first (CSCS, ECS, CISRS, Gas Safe), then trade questions — and many employers finish with a practical trade test or a paid trial day on site.
- Safety scenarios decide it. Expect at least one 'what would you do' on a hazard or unsafe instruction; honest talk about near-misses reads far better than claiming a perfect record.
- Sites have gone digital and low-carbon: RAMS on tablets, snagging apps and drone surveys are normal, and heat pumps, EV chargers and modern methods of construction come up in more interviews every year.
