Tell me about a time you found an unsafe gas situation. How did you classify it and what did you do?
Use the real language — At Risk versus Immediately Dangerous, the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, warning notices, capping off. Procedure followed calmly is the answer.
Walk me through a full boiler installation you've done — from survey to commissioning and paperwork.
Cover sizing, flue route, condensate, gas rate check at commissioning, Benchmark and building regs notification. The paperwork half is what separates pros.
What's the fault that took you longest to crack on a boiler or heating system?
Narrate the elimination: error codes, live readings, testing components rather than swapping parts blind. Method is what they're hiring — parts-cannon engineers cost money.
You're in people's homes every day, often with bad news about their boiler. Tell me about a customer situation you handled well.
Show honest explanation without jargon, options with prices, and never scaring people into work they don't need. Trust drives reviews — and reviews drive this trade.
Talk me through your ACS elements — CCN1, CENWAT and the rest — with expiry dates, and your Gas Safe registration.
Know your elements and dates precisely — employers verify against the Gas Safe register before offer. Flag reassessments due within the year and how you'll cover them.
Walk me through a tightness test on a domestic installation.
This is the standard competence check: gauge on, correct stabilisation and test times, permissible pressure drop, smell test. Say it like you do it — because you do.
What do you check on a landlord gas safety inspection (CP12), and what commonly fails?
Appliances, flues, ventilation, safety devices — plus the record itself. Naming common failures (blocked vents, poor flue terminations) shows real volume of inspections.
Why gas work — and where do you want to take it: commercial tickets, renewables, running your own book?
A trade with responsibility attracts a certain sort of person — say why that's you, and name a genuine next step. Ambition plus safety-mindedness is the ideal mix.
Gas boilers are being phased down in favour of heat pumps and hybrid systems. How are you positioning yourself?2026
The strong answer is a plan: low-temperature heating design training, a heat pump course done or booked, hybrid experience. 'Gas will see me out' is the weak one.
Which cards and tickets do you hold — CSCS and any trade-specific ones — and are they all in date?
Bring the actual cards. Know every expiry date, and if something's lapsed, say what's booked to renew it — an expired ticket can't start on site.
Tell me about a time you spotted a hazard on site before it hurt someone. What did you do?
A real, small example is perfect: what you saw, making it safe or fencing it off, and telling the supervisor. Reporting is the part they're listening for.
You're told to crack on with a task you believe is unsafe. Talk me through exactly what you do.
Stop, say why calmly, suggest the safe alternative, and escalate if pushed. Employers are testing whether you'll actually refuse — say plainly that you would.
How to prepare for a gas engineer interview in the UK
Bring your Gas Safe ID card and ACS certificates — registration is checked on the official register before any offer. Rehearse the tightness test and unsafe-situations procedure out loud; they're the two most common competence checks, and heat pump training is the differentiator.
How Construction & Trades interviews are run in 2026
- Interviews are short and practical: cards and tickets are checked first (CSCS, ECS, CISRS, Gas Safe), then trade questions — and many employers finish with a practical trade test or a paid trial day on site.
- Safety scenarios decide it. Expect at least one 'what would you do' on a hazard or unsafe instruction; honest talk about near-misses reads far better than claiming a perfect record.
