Everyone says prep is the job. Tell me about the worst surface you've had to bring back — and how.
Flaking exteriors, nicotine-stained ceilings, filled and skimmed walls — narrate the sequence and products. Prep stories are how decorators spot each other.
What's the finish you're proudest of, and what would a picky eye have found if you'd rushed it?
Show you know what 'good' looks like in raking light: no misses, crisp cut lines, flat sheen. Photos on your phone close the deal.
Tell me about decorating in someone's home or a working office. How do you protect the space and the relationship?
Sheeting up properly, daily tidy-downs, being polite and predictable. Repeat domestic work comes from trust — give an example of a customer who had you back.
Walk me through how you'd plan a full redecoration — order of rooms, order of surfaces, drying times.
Ceilings, walls, woodwork — with drying and recoat times planned around it. Showing you sequence to avoid dead time is what makes you profitable to employ.
New plaster: what do you do before the first proper coat goes on?
A mist coat of watered-down emulsion on fully dried plaster — and checking it IS dry. It's the classic knowledge check; answer without hesitation.
How do you choose and use primers — bare wood, MDF, metal, previously painted gloss?
Match primer to substrate and name real products you rate. Mentioning adhesion promoters over old gloss (and keying it first) shows time served.
Do you spray? Tell me about your airless or HVLP experience — and when you'd still brush and roll.
Spraying is increasingly expected on site work and new builds. If you spray, talk masking discipline and tip sizes; if not, say you're keen to train.
Why decorating — and what sort of work do you enjoy most: domestic, commercial, heritage?
A genuine liking for transformation — the before and after — always lands. A preference plus flexibility is the ideal shape of answer.
What's changed in materials lately — water-based trim paints, low-VOC specs — and how has it changed your methods?2026
Water-based glosses dry fast and level differently — talk brush choice and open time. Showing you've adapted rather than grumbled marks you as current.
Which cards and tickets do you hold — CSCS and any trade-specific ones — and are they all in date?
Bring the actual cards. Know every expiry date, and if something's lapsed, say what's booked to renew it — an expired ticket can't start on site.
Tell me about a time you spotted a hazard on site before it hurt someone. What did you do?
A real, small example is perfect: what you saw, making it safe or fencing it off, and telling the supervisor. Reporting is the part they're listening for.
You're told to crack on with a task you believe is unsafe. Talk me through exactly what you do.
Stop, say why calmly, suggest the safe alternative, and escalate if pushed. Employers are testing whether you'll actually refuse — say plainly that you would.
