The questions to expect
Tell me about a cloud migration or greenfield build you worked on. What would you do differently now?
Pick one honest regret — lift-and-shift you'd re-architect, missing landing zone, no tagging strategy — and show the lesson applied since.
Describe a time infrastructure drift or a bad apply caused a problem. How did you fix the process, not just the incident?
The process fix is the answer they want: remote state with locking, plan review in CI, drift detection — not 'I was more careful'.
Tell me about a time you cut a cloud bill. Where was the waste?
Name numbers and mechanisms: rightsizing, storage tiers, killing zombie resources, reserved capacity. Cost sense is a hiring criterion now.
Tell me about a time you found and fixed over-permissive access.
Show the audit habit that found it and the least-privilege redesign that fixed it — without breaking the team that had the access.
Design a highly available three-tier application across availability zones. What fails, and what happens when it does?
Walk the failure modes deliberately: AZ loss, database failover, stateless vs stateful tiers. Say what you'd accept at what cost.
How do you structure Terraform for multiple environments — state, modules, promotion between dev and prod?
Terraform is the lingua franca — show reusable modules, per-environment config, remote state with locking, and plans reviewed in CI.
How would you implement least-privilege IAM for a new service?
Dedicated roles per service, scoped to exact resources, no wildcard actions, and a review loop (e.g. access analysers) to tighten over time.
Why cloud infrastructure work — what do you enjoy about it?
Tie it to leverage — one engineer running platforms that used to need a data-centre team — plus the certification path you're actually on.
Teams now generate Terraform and IAM policies with AI. What could go wrong, and what's your review process?2026
Plausible-but-wrong is the danger: invented resource names, over-broad permissions. Your answer is a review gate, tests, and policy-as-code.
Tell me about a time you explained a technical problem to someone non-technical.
Pick a real audience and show the translation: the analogy you used, what you left out, and how you checked they got it.
Describe a production incident you were involved in. What did you do first?
Order matters: mitigate, communicate, then root-cause. Finish with the fix that stopped it happening again.
Walk me through a technical decision you made that you later reversed.
Reversing well is the skill. Show what new information arrived, how fast you acted on it, and what the reversal cost.
How to prepare for a cloud engineer interview in the UK
UK employers usually hire for one primary cloud (Azure is especially common in the public sector, AWS in product companies) — lead with theirs. Associate-level certification plus a real cost or security story goes a long way.
How Technology & IT interviews are run in 2026
- Coding rounds increasingly allow — or expect — an AI assistant: you are marked on how you prompt, verify and fix its output, not typing speed. Live reasoning, debugging and code-review rounds have grown to compensate.
- System design and 'explain your thinking out loud' rounds carry more weight than puzzle-style coding; many employers explicitly verify real-time reasoning because take-homes are now AI-solvable.
- Volume employers screen with async one-way video and online tests before any human round, so camera practice matters at the top of the funnel.
Turn this into a plan
A list of questions is a start; a programme is what changes the outcome. Intervooh builds a day-by-day plan for your exact cloud engineer interview — company research, story building with an AI coach, spoken practice with delivery feedback, and scored mock interviews. It never writes your answers for you.
