The questions to expect
Tell me about the hardest platform-specific problem you've solved — lifecycle, memory, background work.
Platform depth is what separates mobile specialists from web developers with a wrapper. Get specific about the OS behaviour involved.
Describe a release that went wrong — a rejected build or a bad version in production. You can't hotfix mobile; what did you do?
Show the mobile-specific playbook: staged rollout halted, feature flags, forced update as last resort — and the release checks added after.
Tell me about a time you fixed a janky or slow screen. How did you profile it?
Name the profiler and the metric (frame drops, startup time), the cause you found, and the before/after numbers.
Tell me about a bug that only appeared on certain devices or OS versions. How did you track it down?
Show your matrix strategy: crash reporting, device farms, prioritising by your actual user base — not owning fifty phones.
Explain the app lifecycle on your platform, and how you preserve state when the OS kills your app.
A staple that still filters candidates. Walk the states precisely, then the practical bit: what you persist, when, and what restoring feels like.
How do you architect a mobile app for offline use and sync?
Local source of truth, sync strategy, conflict resolution — pick a real approach you've used and defend its trade-offs.
Native versus cross-platform (React Native, Flutter) — how would you choose for a new product?
No tribal answers: frame it by team skills, performance needs, platform features and budget. Show you've shipped with at least one and know its edges.
Why mobile development specifically?
The good answers love the constraint: real devices, app-store discipline, being in users' pockets. Name an app you shipped or admire and why.
Product wants an AI feature in the app. On-device model or API call — how do you decide?2026
Frame the trade-offs: latency, privacy, cost, offline needs, battery, store policy. Naming the platform toolkits (Core ML, Gemini Nano) adds credibility.
Tell me about a time you explained a technical problem to someone non-technical.
Pick a real audience and show the translation: the analogy you used, what you left out, and how you checked they got it.
Describe a production incident you were involved in. What did you do first?
Order matters: mitigate, communicate, then root-cause. Finish with the fix that stopped it happening again.
Walk me through a technical decision you made that you later reversed.
Reversing well is the skill. Show what new information arrived, how fast you acted on it, and what the reversal cost.
