What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about the worst production incident you've handled. Walk me through the timeline.

The senior signal is the order: mitigate, communicate, then root-cause. End on the blameless postmortem and what it changed.

Describe something manual you automated. What did it actually save?

Quantify the toil removed — hours, errors, on-call pages — and admit what the automation still can't handle.

Tell me about changing how developers work — deployments, on-call, testing — without having authority over them.

Influence is the competency. Show you made the right thing the easy thing (paved paths, defaults) rather than policing.

Tell me about a time your monitoring missed something important. What did you change?

Own the gap, then show the fix in terms of user-facing symptoms and SLOs — not just 'we added more alerts'.

How do you design a zero-downtime deployment? Talk through blue-green versus canary, and when you'd roll back.

Tie the strategy to risk and cost, define the rollback trigger up front, and mention database migrations — the bit everyone forgets.

A service has burnt half its error budget in a day. What do you do?

Show you know what error budgets are for: investigate the burn, then negotiate — slow releases, harden, or revisit the SLO. Policy, not panic.

Walk me through a CI/CD pipeline you've built, from commit to production. Where were the quality gates?

Name the stages and what each one catches. Bonus points for what you deliberately left out to keep it fast.

Why reliability and operations work, rather than pure feature development?

Show genuine taste for it — systems thinking, the calm of a good runbook, force-multiplying other engineers.

How are you using AI in operations work — log analysis, runbooks, incident summaries — and where has it misled you?2026

Give one real win and one real failure. Trusting an AI hypothesis during an incident without verifying is the trap they're probing for.

Tell me about a time you explained a technical problem to someone non-technical.

Pick a real audience and show the translation: the analogy you used, what you left out, and how you checked they got it.

Describe a production incident you were involved in. What did you do first?

Order matters: mitigate, communicate, then root-cause. Finish with the fix that stopped it happening again.

Walk me through a technical decision you made that you later reversed.

Reversing well is the skill. Show what new information arrived, how fast you acted on it, and what the reversal cost.
