Tell me about an electrical system or circuit you designed or significantly modified. What drove the key decisions?
Frame it as requirement → constraints → choices: supply arrangement, protection, cable sizing, component selection. Defend one decision in detail rather than skim five.
Tell me about an intermittent fault that took real detective work. How did you finally pin it down?
Intermittents are the great leveller — show logging, splitting the system, reproducing the conditions. The systematic method is worth more than the fault itself.
Tell me about a time you flagged a compliance or safety issue in a design or installation — and what it cost to fix.
Name the standard involved (BS 7671, EN 60204, ATEX — whichever is true) and show the issue raised formally. Electrical engineers are hired to be the ones who won't let it slide.
Tell me about working with mechanical engineers, software teams or site trades on a shared design. Where did it rub, and how did you fix it?
Interfaces are where projects fail — panel space, cable routes, control philosophy. Show early coordination and one concrete clash resolved without a turf war.
How do you approach specifying protection for a system — device selection, discrimination, fault levels?
Walk the logic: fault level calculation, device ratings, discrimination between upstream and downstream. A real study you've done — even a simple one — anchors it.
When would you use three-phase over single-phase, and what changes in your design when you do?
Classic fundamentals check: power delivery, motor loads, balancing, neutral considerations. Answer crisply — hesitation on basics undermines everything else.
Which standards frame your day-to-day work, and how do you keep up when they change?
Name your actual set — BS 7671 amendments, machinery safety, EMC — and one real habit for staying current: IET updates, CPD, standards briefings at work.
