The questions to expect
Talk me through the P&L you owned — the levers you pulled and what moved.
Revenue, margin, cost base, cash — show which lever you chose and why, with the before/after numbers. Vagueness here reads as never having truly owned it.
Tell me about aligning functions with competing priorities — sales, ops, finance — behind one plan.
Show you traded openly: what each function gave and got, the shared scoreboard you created, and the conflict you surfaced early instead of letting it fester.
Describe a decision where you traded short-term profit for long-term customer value — or the reverse. How did you decide?
Name the framework you used — lifetime value, brand risk, cash reality — and own the trade explicitly. GMs are hired for exactly this judgement.
Give me an example of raising standards across a site or business unit. What did you measure and how did you sustain it?
Standards stick through routines: audits, visible metrics, leaders modelling it daily. Show the gap you found, the routine you built, and the metric a year later.
You take over an underperforming site as GM. What do your first 90 days look like?
Listen-diagnose-act, in that order: weeks with the floor and the numbers, quick wins that signal change, then a focused plan on the two things that matter most.
Your best-performing manager behaves in a way that breaches your values. What do you do?
Performance never buys a pass — address it directly and follow process regardless of their numbers. The team is watching what you tolerate; say you know that.
Why general management — breadth over depth?
Show you relish accountability for the whole result and enjoy leading specialists better than you at their craft. Name the moment you knew you wanted the full P&L.
How do you lead a business through AI-driven change when parts of your team fear for their jobs?2026
Honesty over spin: say what's changing and what isn't, invest visibly in retraining, and let people shape the new roles. Trust survives truth, not reassurance.
Tell me about influencing a senior stakeholder who disagreed with your recommendation.
Show you understood their objection before countering it, brought evidence, and gave them a route to agree without losing face.
Estimate the size of the UK market for takeaway coffee.
Structure out loud: population, segment by habit, cups per week, price per cup. Round numbers, state assumptions, sense-check the total at the end.
Describe a time your analysis changed a decision that was already heading the other way.
The result is the reversed decision. Show the analysis briefly, then spend time on how you landed it with the people who'd already made up their minds.
You're mid-way through a project and realise the original plan won't deliver. What do you do?
Bad news travels first-class: size the gap, build options, tell the sponsor early with a recommendation. Hiding a slipping plan is the failure they're screening for.
How to prepare for a general manager interview in the UK
GM interviews are usually panel-based with numbers under the microscope — bring your P&L scale, growth and margin story, plus one turnaround and one people-leadership story. UK employers often add a psychometric or board-presentation stage at final round; ask what's coming.
How Consulting & Management interviews are run in 2026
- Consulting interviews still centre on the case: profitability, market sizing and market entry problems solved live, with mental maths on the spot, alongside fit/behavioural rounds — successful candidates typically log dozens of practice cases.
- Project, programme and operations roles run competency interviews with methodology and scenario questions; PRINCE2 carries weight in UK government and corporate settings, with agile and hybrid delivery expected everywhere.
- In 2026 panels probe AI fluency from both ends: how you use AI in analysis and delivery, and how you lead teams through AI-driven change.
