What they assess

The questions to expect

Your client is a supermarket chain whose profits have fallen 15% in two years. How would you structure the problem?

Profit = revenue minus cost — branch each side, then ask the killer question: is the decline industry-wide or company-specific? That one question signals business judgement.

Estimate how many electric vehicle charging points the UK will need by 2030.

Market sizing: EV fleet size, home versus public charging split, cars per public charger. Round aggressively, narrate assumptions, sanity-check against today's number.

A private equity client is considering buying a chain of gyms. What would you want to know before advising them?

Structure a due diligence scan: market attractiveness, company performance versus peers, value-creation levers, deal factors. Breadth first, then say where you'd dig.

Tell me about winning the trust of a sceptical client or stakeholder.

Trust is earned in small, early deliveries. Show you listened to their real worry, delivered something useful fast, and let the work argue for you.

Describe the most complex problem you've broken down. Walk me through your structure.

Draw the tree out loud — the three or four branches, why they were MECE-ish, and which branch the answer actually lived in. Structure IS the answer here.

Tell me about presenting a recommendation to senior leaders and being challenged on it.

Answer-first delivery, then how you took the challenge: conceding what was fair, holding what was evidenced. Composure under fire is the scored behaviour.

Give an example of an analysis you built that drove a real decision. What did you have to get right?

Name the model or dataset, the assumption everything hinged on, and how you pressure-tested it. Then the decision and the number it moved.

Why consulting — and why at this point in your career?

Variety, pace and client problems are table stakes — add something personal and true, and show you understand the lifestyle you're signing up for.

AI tools now produce first-draft models and slide decks. What makes a good consultant in that world?2026

You move up the stack: problem framing, client trust, judgement on what the analysis misses. Show you use the tools hard and verify everything they produce.

Tell me about influencing a senior stakeholder who disagreed with your recommendation.

Show you understood their objection before countering it, brought evidence, and gave them a route to agree without losing face.

Estimate the size of the UK market for takeaway coffee.

Structure out loud: population, segment by habit, cups per week, price per cup. Round numbers, state assumptions, sense-check the total at the end.

Describe a time your analysis changed a decision that was already heading the other way.

The result is the reversed decision. Show the analysis briefly, then spend time on how you landed it with the people who'd already made up their minds.
