The questions to expect
Pick a topic pupils find hard in your subject. How do you teach it?
This tests pedagogical content knowledge: name the misconception, your explanation or model that beats it, and how you check it's gone.
Describe a time you dealt with defiance or confrontation in the classroom.
Calm, scripted, de-personalised: the language of choice, take-up time, following the policy through. The result is the relationship repaired afterwards.
Tell me about a time you used data to close a gap for a group of pupils.
Data is only the start: what you changed in the classroom is the story. Name the group, the intervention and the shift in outcomes.
You notice a Year 9 pupil has become withdrawn and has unexplained bruises. Talk me through what you do.
Don't wait for proof or a disclosure: record what you've seen factually and report to the DSL promptly. If the child talks, listen without leading and never promise secrecy.
How do you stretch the strongest pupils while supporting those with SEND in the same class?
One curriculum, adapted access: scaffolds, questioning depth, flexible grouping. Avoid 'three worksheets' differentiation — it's out of favour and hard to defend.
How do you prepare a mixed-ability Year 11 class for their GCSE exams?
Specification-sharp: retrieval practice, walking-talking mocks, exam technique, targeted intervention from question-level analysis. Show you know your board's papers.
Your interview lesson is 25 minutes with an unfamiliar Year 8 class. What's your plan?
One clear objective, routines from minute one, a visible check on learning by the end. In the debrief, critique your own lesson before they do.
Why teach your subject — and how do you sell it to a 14-year-old who says it's pointless?
Genuine love of the discipline plus a street-level answer for the pupil. Panels want the enthusiasm they'll be putting in front of 150 teenagers a day.
Pupils are using AI to draft their homework. How do you respond as a classroom teacher?2026
Neither panic nor ban: redesign assessment towards in-class and oral work, teach AI literacy, follow the school's policy — and use the tools yourself so you know them.

Report to the headteacher without delay — or the chair of governors if it concerns the head. KCSIE's low-level concerns and whistleblowing routes exist for exactly this.
What is every adult's responsibility for safeguarding in a school?
'Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.' Know the DSL by role, the latest KCSIE, and that your duty is to report concerns promptly — not to judge how serious they are.
