The questions to expect
Tell me about your most important client relationship. How did you build and keep their trust?
Show deliberate work: regular contact with purpose, knowing their business, delivering bad news early. Trust is built in specifics.
Tell me about an account you grew significantly. Where did the extra revenue come from?
Name the mechanism — new departments, new products, a renewal uplift — and the before/after numbers. Growth by accident doesn't count.
Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news to a client — a delay, an error, a price rise.
Early, honest, with a plan: that's the winning shape. Show the conversation you had and the state of the relationship afterwards.
Tell me about a renewal or contract negotiation where the client pushed hard on price.
Show you traded rather than caved — value added, scope adjusted, terms exchanged for discount — and protected the margin you could.
How would you prioritise your time across a portfolio of, say, forty accounts?
Segment out loud: by value, growth potential and risk. Name what the top tier gets that the bottom tier doesn't — that judgement is the job.
What goes into your account plan for a key client? Walk me through one.
Cover their objectives, your footprint, whitespace, risks and named stakeholders. A real (anonymised) example beats a textbook structure.
A key account tells you they're reviewing the market and your contract is 'in play'. What do you do this week?
Move fast and diagnose: get face to face, find what changed, map who's driving the review, and bring your leadership in early — not at the end.
Why account management rather than new business sales?
Say what genuinely suits you about depth over volume — long relationships, compounding growth — without rubbishing new business hunters.
How do you spot an account going quiet before it becomes an account leaving?2026
Name real early signals — usage dips, slower replies, a champion moving on — and the CRM or AI health alerts you use to catch them systematically.
Walk me through your numbers in your last role — target, attainment, average deal size.
Know your figures cold and say them plainly: quota, % attainment, deal size, cycle length. Hesitation here costs more than a modest number does.
Role-play: sell me this pen — or a product you know well.
Don't pitch features. Ask two or three questions about my needs first, then sell to what I told you. Close by asking for something specific.
Role-play: I'm a prospect who's agreed to a 15-minute call. Run your discovery.
Spend most of the time asking open questions and listening. Dig into pain, impact and timeline, summarise back, then agree a concrete next step.
