What they assess

The questions to expect

Tell me about an at-risk account you turned around. What were the warning signs, and what did you do?

Name the signals — usage drop, silent champion, missed QBR — then the rescue plan with dates. End with the renewal that happened because of it.

Walk me through an onboarding you ran that got a customer to value quickly.

Define 'first value' for that customer and the days it took to get there. A crisp time-to-value number makes this answer memorable.

Tell me about expansion revenue you created — an upsell or new team you brought onto the product.

Show the expansion grew from delivered value, not a pitch: the outcome you proved first, then the natural next conversation. Give the uplift figure.

Tell me about a time you fought internally for a customer — a product fix, a billing issue, an exception.

Show you turned a complaint into a case: evidence, the right internal audience, and follow-through until it shipped. That's advocacy, not escalation.

How do you measure customer health? Which signals do you trust and which are vanity?

Weight usage depth and outcomes over sentiment scores. Saying 'a high NPS from a non-user means nothing' shows you've done this for real.

How do you run a quarterly business review that a busy executive actually wants to attend?

Lead with their outcomes against their goals, not your usage charts. One decision to make and one recommendation — that's what earns the next QBR.

Your champion at a key account hands in their notice. What's your plan for the next thirty days?

Champion departure is a top churn cause — act in days: multithread to their peers, re-onboard the successor, and brief your leadership on the risk.

Why customer success rather than a straight sales role?

Anchor it in outcomes: you like making the promise come true after the deal. Acknowledge the commercial side — retention is revenue too.

AI now handles routine onboarding and support queries. Where does a human CSM earn their salary in 2026?2026

Embrace the automation, then name the human layer: strategic guidance, executive relationships, renewals and rescue. Show you use the AI outputs daily.

Walk me through your numbers in your last role — target, attainment, average deal size.

Know your figures cold and say them plainly: quota, % attainment, deal size, cycle length. Hesitation here costs more than a modest number does.

Role-play: sell me this pen — or a product you know well.

Don't pitch features. Ask two or three questions about my needs first, then sell to what I told you. Close by asking for something specific.

Role-play: I'm a prospect who's agreed to a 15-minute call. Run your discovery.

Spend most of the time asking open questions and listening. Dig into pain, impact and timeline, summarise back, then agree a concrete next step.
