The questions to expect
Walk me through a sale you took from first contact to signed order. Where did you nearly lose it?
Tell one deal in sequence and slow down at the wobble — the objection or stall — and exactly what you did to save it. Finish with the value.
Tell me about a time you built your own pipeline rather than working leads you were handed.
Show self-sufficiency: where you found the names, how many touches it took, and what converted. Activity numbers make this story credible.
Tell me about a customer who came back to buy from you again. What made them return?
The answer is aftercare: what you did between the sales — check-ins, fixing a problem fast — that made the second sale easy.
Tell me about a month you were badly behind target. What did you actually do?
Show the recovery plan, not the panic: where you found quick pipeline, what activity you doubled, and whether you closed the gap — honestly.
What's your process from enquiry to close? Talk me through the steps you never skip.
A named sequence — qualify, discover, propose, handle objections, close, follow up — with a reason for each step beats buzzwords.
Pitch me one of your current products or services in two minutes, as if I'm a real buyer.
Practise this before interview day. Open with the problem it solves, one proof point, and end by asking me a question — not with silence.
A warm lead has gone cold — three unanswered follow-ups. What do you do next?
Show persistence with judgement: change channel, add new value in the message, set a break-up email deadline. Never just 'keep chasing'.
Why a career in sales — and why do you think you're good at it?
Be honest: the competition, the money, the customer contact. Then one proof you're built for it — a target hit, a knock-back that didn't stop you.
Cold outreach gets fewer replies every year. How do you earn a response in 2026?2026
Specifics win: researched personalisation, a relevant trigger event, multi-channel touches, and keeping AI drafts sounding like you.
Walk me through your numbers in your last role — target, attainment, average deal size.
Know your figures cold and say them plainly: quota, % attainment, deal size, cycle length. Hesitation here costs more than a modest number does.
Role-play: sell me this pen — or a product you know well.
Don't pitch features. Ask two or three questions about my needs first, then sell to what I told you. Close by asking for something specific.
Role-play: I'm a prospect who's agreed to a 15-minute call. Run your discovery.
Spend most of the time asking open questions and listening. Dig into pain, impact and timeline, summarise back, then agree a concrete next step.
